There are a lot of pictures to get posted and a lot of news to spread around. But I wanted to first share something that I was thinking about. I have been cycling quite a bit over the past couple of months… trying to get in at least 30 minutes a day even if it is on my trainer in the garage. Cycling, and swimming, are the only activities that have been relatively pain free for my knee (one of those whole other stories). The news that shocked me today was the fact that Floyd Landis’ “A” sample tested positive. I was a huge Landis supporter during the tour. I thought it was incredible that an American was stepping in with a shot to pick up where Lance left off. Then came Stage 16 - day two in the Pyranees, and Landis bonked. It would forever go down in history as the worst failure in the history of sports. Landis who wore Yellow going into that day was left in the dust to end up 8 minutes back at the end of the stage. People were saying it was over, go home they said. But Landis was back on the bike the next day and his performance was nothing less than spectacular… making up the 8 minutes he lost. That to me was the most incredible thing I had ever seen in sports - to have the guts and determination to come back like that. Landis had my respect and I was truly a fan. He would go on to win the Tour last Sunday - all with a degenerative hip that would need surgery… which then brings us back to today. Now, people are calling cycling a joke - that it is a sport of “Lycra Drug Fiends on Wheels.” While in some respects that may be true, and I may eat my words at some point, but I actually side with Landis on this one. I missed Father’s Day or did it miss me? All I wanted was some time to relax and spend some time playing with Avery and I got my wish, but it seems that I am still relaxing. I have been keeping up shop over at Timed Finals, but something had to give. Work, family, wife, child, training for a triathlon… So, in the meantime, I have lost nearly 20 pounds. I feel better and I feel healthier. It is easier to get up in the morning, and easier to work through the day (although without the free soda during construction at the office - staying awake is a chore sometimes). I always thought that having a kid would be work and in turn would keep me in shape, but that is quite the contrary. Despite the squats, bouncing, lunges, rocking, etc. that I did with Avery as a baby, I still did not keep the weight off. We headed out about 5-7 miles into the Gulf… that is out past the Mississippi Sound (about 20 miles total from shore). A long way for land-lubbers like myself. Luckily I had taken a Dramamine - just in case. The captain took us out towards the shrimp boats because he felt that the best fishing was found near them. He was right. The first few casts were fruitful for those that fished. Why do I say “those that fish?” I was afraid… not afraid of fishing, but because I had never fished before, I was afraid of dropping the fishing pole in the water. So, I sat on the “sidelines” and let the “pros” do the fishing… until I was told that fishing was not a spectator sport. I was handed a pole and within seconds I had hooked a fish, and he was off. 10-12 minutes of reeling, pulling, following the fish around the boat, I had pulled up a 75-80 pound Bull Shark. Not bad for my first fish, and now I was hooked - no pun intended. I ended up catching a Black-Tip Shark about the same size as the Bull. So, I spent yesterday in jeans and a two shirts in 95 degree heat and just about 100% humidity… not my idea of comfort, but I lived long enough to make it to today when my luggage arrived. I am here in Hattiesburg to help “coach” at the Gold Medal swim camp with friends Dave Kelsheimer and Neil Walker. It has been a great experience so far and has been a lot of fun… spent the last two days working with about 50 swimmers on technique. Last night Neil and I gave about an hour’s worth of motivational talks, and tonight we just returned home from a spirited bowling match (just call me “the dude”). This morning I swam with the kids for about an hour… my first real practice in almost 12 months… it was painful. We have a few more days to go, then it is golf, a crawfish boil, and a day out in the gulf deep sea fishing.
