I have talked about the topic of baby signs before. Colleen and I went back and forth for a little while on the topic and whether or not we would attempt to teach Avery them. Despite the the numerous friend that we know who swear by it, we decided against it. Why? The main reason, whether it is true or not, is that from multiple people in the education field, we were told that children tend to rely more upon the fact that they can sign and not develop speech as quickly.
Needless to say, Avery has picked up the sign for ‘please’ – where? We have absolutely no idea. Not at home, not at daycare. We are not arguing because it is really cute and we use it to our advantage in trying to reinforce manners. It seems to be working because Avery is intent on saying (or signing) please in order to get things she wants.
