Drowning can happen to anyone, at any time, at any place regardless of social status. Drowning remains the second- leading cause of injury-related death for children ages 1 to 14 years according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

It really is important as a parent to understand the facts about drowning. Here are two highlights:

  • According to the U.S. CPSC Drowning Study, conscientious parents who understand the need for supervision were almost always present at the time of drowning.
  • Swimming lessons do not prepare a child for a drowning or a near drowning situation (although I will add that basic water safety and swimming knowledge will help).
