A week or so ago, Colleen and I decided to splurge and look into getting Avery her first pair of sneakers. So, armed with a baby, our wallet, and a $5 off coupon, we made our way to Stride Rite. Turns out that we needed to take out a second, third, and fourth mortgage to pay for a pair of shoes that Avery would wear for 3 or 4 months.

After going through the trouble of finding the “perfect” shoe, we were stuck with the dilemma of the shoe not being in stock… to top that off they would ship it (fine), but not allow us to use our coupon – the nerve! I could handle sucking it up and splurging with the coupon, but my frugal self couldn’t handle not being able to use the coupon, so I walked away.

Turns out that the next day at Target, Colleen found shoes made by Stride Rite for a quarter of the price. This just teaches that when it comes to baby clothes and shoes – don’t pay top dollar… Target, Wal-Mart, or Kohls works just fine.

We have Payless Shoes here and they offer your baby’s first pair of shoes for free. A great marketing ploy to get people in the store for baby shoes, and of course we have to buy the other three shoes the same day…
