As Avery and I moved into the water, she sort of gave me this look like "what in the world are we doing?" One of the keys to this first swim and any swim with Avery is that I want her to be self dependant in the water – meaning I did not want her to have to just be held and snuggled up to me any time we went swimming.
With that in mind, I held her at arms length the entire time we were in the water. It certainly took her some time to get acclimated – she shivered a bit and was a little scared when I put her on her back, but eventually she warmed up to this whole swimming idea.
She started laughing and splashing, and I will tell you that she seems to be a natural with this swimming thing as she had the butterfly down pat. She had both arms going and both legs kicking at the same time. Now it could have been her just flailing for her life, but between the smiles and the laughs, I knew that this was not the case.
So, aside from the cold water and the initial strangeness of the surroundings. Swim number one was a big success in my book. Cannot wait for next weekend.
